Masterpieces by Chakrabhand Posayakrit : Exquisite Thai Puppets at Kunawong House Museum

Updated: May 9

Today, Kunawong House Museum invites you to discover the fascinating story of a collector and his treasured “Nang” (female puppet) and “Phra” (male puppet)—both masterpieces created by Thailand’s national artist, Chakrabhand Posayakrit. These exquisite puppets are among the highlights of The Kunawong Residence Tour, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the intricate world of traditional Thai puppetry.

Each puppet reflects the rich artistry and craftsmanship of Thailand’s cultural heritage. The puppets are adorned with delicate gold leaf, shimmering glass inlays, and fine gold thread embroidery. Their intricate details showcase the exceptional skill of Chakrabhand Posayakrit, making them rare works of art that must be seen in person to truly appreciate their beauty and artistry.

The Nang (female puppet) wears an elaborate “rad klao plew” crown, gilded and decorated with glass mosaics. A garland gracefully drapes from her left side. Her front garment is meticulously embroidered with gold threads and topped with a “thap suang” chest ornament embellished with gold and glass. Her shawl is beautifully stitched with gold threads and beads, while her vivid red costume features intricate patterns of embroidery and beadwork. Her real human hair is tied elegantly, and both arms are posed gracefully in traditional Thai dance gestures, capturing the refined movement of Thai classical dance.

The Phra (male puppet) wears a tall gilded crown adorned with glass inlays. His right hand holds a golden sword (phra khan). His costume is carefully designed with embroidered “indrathanu” epaulettes on both shoulders and a padded collar. His garment is intricately embroidered with gold threads and sequins, harmoniously complementing the lower garment in a similar ornate pattern as the Nang.

Don’t miss the chance to view these masterpieces by Chakrabhand Posayakrit—artworks that celebrate the finest traditions of Thai craftsmanship. The puppets are on display in the Chakrabhand Room inside The Residence at Kunawong House Museum, one of the must-visit museums in Thailand for art lovers and cultural explorers.
