The portrait of H.R.H. Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong is respectfully enshrined

At the Kunawong House Museum, visitors are invited to admire the sculpture of H.R.H. Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, one of the earliest portrait works created in Thailand by Professor Silpa Bhirasri, soon after he began his service as a sculptor at the Fine Arts Department. Alongside stands an exquisite collection of paintings and ceremonial fans (talapat) designed by Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, widely revered as Somdet Kru (“The Master”), a polymath of Thai art. These include the Rattanaporn Fan commissioned during the reign of King Rama VII in 1928, the Phra Wiman Phra Phayanchon Fan (1920), the funerary fan for Queen Saovabha Phongsri (1920), and the Chinnasiri Fan designed for the cremation of Somdet Phra Sangharaja Krom Luang Chinaworasiriwat (1938).

Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, renowned for his mastery across multiple disciplines of Thai art, was entrusted with overseeing the nation’s artistic affairs and honored as the “Great Master Craftsman of Siam.” He personally sat as a model for Professor Silpa’s sculpture, serving as a testament to the sculptor’s skill in portraiture. Beyond this, the Prince produced a wide body of work spanning painting, mural art, architecture, book cover and illustration design, royal seals and insignias, decorations of sacred fans, water bowl patterns, lettering, stage design, and more.

Visitors can experience this extraordinary legacy at the Kunawong House Museum, where the sculpture of H.R.H. Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong by Professor Silpa Bhirasri is on display, alongside paintings and ceremonial fans designed by the Prince himself.
